Radial clusters of vivianite crystals are examples of specimens that break up as a result of shrinkage due to dehydration of a clay-containing matrix between individual vivianite crystals (Figure 3.19).
The compressive strength of the vivianite crystals effectively resists radial shrinkage.
This, in turn, results in failure of the vivianite crystals across the perfect {010} cleavage (Figure 3-20).
